Here's a comment from one of our recent students: |
| Dan,
I am sure not many readers send you a Thank You, but I am. Without these weekly tips and the class I had ordered from you, I would not have been able to proceed with the promotion I received a month ago. I would like to thank you and Gloria for putting these tips together for all who follow your advice in Business Writing. I would not have been ready to take on this challenge without your help. Thank you, Frank Feltes Technical Leader (Project manager) |
Tip # 313: Offer to write a draft of your performance review listing your successes, shortcomings, strengths, and weaknesses. If your boss does not agree with you, it means you should ask for more feedback. And the boss may need more reminders of your successes.
Larry Davis sent this request:
Love getting your tips - - But I get so many emails at work that I have a minimum amount of time to spend on each individual one - - I think the exercises are wonderful, however this 'Hollywood serial' idea of holding the answers until next email causes much wasted time on my end - - in a teaching environment this might be ok, but in business, I want to read the exercise, formulate my answer in my mind, check your answer and move on - -might be worthwhile to investigate others in the busy business environment.
What are your feelings?
I would like to recommend a humorous and interesting book about punctuation: Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation, author, Lynne Truss. This British bestseller tells us that sloppy usage, low standards on the internet, and now “txt msgs,” have made proper punctuation an endangered species.
Weekly Exercise:
We receive over 200 emails per day. We encourage you to answer our weekly tips, but please, if you are answering this weekly tip exercise, identify the tip number in the subject line of your email.
Revise the following sentences by correcting, inserting, or removing punctuation:
“The illiterate of the future will not be the person who cannot read. It will be the person who does not know how to learn.” (Alvin Toffler)
