Bull's Eye Business Writing Tips

Tip #462: Recommend actions ...

These FREE weekly business writing tips
will help you improve your business writing.

Tip 462:  Recommend actions rather than refer to individual mental states.

For example:

Use: We recommend names that parallel the age-old and pure qualities of the product.

Do not use: We believe you should use…." Or "We think," or "We imagine."

Weekly Exercise:

We receive over 200 emails per day.  We encourage you to answer our weekly tips, but please, if you are answering this weekly tip exercise,  identify the tip number in the subject line of your email.

This week’s quiz:

Please rewrite the following:

Sales have increased more than 20 percent.
The reason is because our sales force has been more aggressive this year.

Comments:

Fox Cole commented on Tip #461:

I believe the use of "to" versus "with" in this phrase is a style choice rather than a matter of correct or incorrect usage. The Oxford English Dictionary, 2 ed., lists both usages and includes examples of both. The entry in its entirety is below. Please note the examples dated 1713 and 1842.

13. a. in regard of or to, with regard to, as to the regard of, in respect of, with respect or reference to.

c1477 Caxton Jason 35 The more parte of men haue no verite ne loyaulte
as to the regard of loue. 1512 Helyas in Thoms Prose Rom. (1827) III. 101
As to the regarde of my londe and duchi of Boulion, I give it freely to
this valiaunt knight. 1599 Shakes. Hen. V, i. i. 77 In regard of Causes
now in hand. 1680 Boyle Scept. Chem. iv. 219 There are divers sorts of
compound Bodies, even in regard of all or some of their Ingredients. 1713
Berkeley Hylas & Phil. i. Wks. 1871 I. 266, I speak with regard to sensible
things only. 1747 Gould Eng. Ants 37 There does not seem to be any
considerable Variation in regard of the Eggs. 1792 Monthly Rev. May VIII.
77 In regard to the matter,+he had, no doubt, been misled. 1842 Grove
Corr. Phys. Forces 94 The world was believed fixed until+it was found to
change its place with regard to them. 1869 Goulburn Purs. Holiness viii.
66 Of the affinity between God and Man, in regard of man's wants and God's
fulness.

Quote of the week:

"Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not; a sense of humor to console him for what he is." (Francis Bacon)

My suggestion:

Do not use "the reason is because" since because, which in the sentence above, repeats the notion of cause, and it should be replaced with "that."

1. Sales have increased more than 20 percent. The reason is that our sales force has been more aggressive this year.

2. Sales have increased more than 20 percent this year because our sales force has been more aggressive.
