Tip #63: Be careful with the use
of words such as ‘but’ because it’s easy to be misunderstood
when writing.
For example, if you are in
business and dealing with difficult customers or clients, you will
find that changing the word ‘but’ to the word ‘and’ can
work wonders.
Original:
We’re unable to send you your order
because you sent the check but didn’t tell us your address.
(This implies that the customer is a bit
absent-minded.)
Better:
We’re unable to send you your order
because you sent the check and didn’t tell us your address.
(This implies that this is a normal thing to
do—the customer isn’t made to feel stupid).
Original:
You say your glass slippers were ruined when
you dropped them on the steps at midnight, but they were
purchased at sale price.
(This leads the customer to expect less
money returned).
Better:
You say your glass slippers were ruined when
you dropped them on the steps at midnight, and they were
purchased at sale price.
(This reminds the customer about how clever
she was to grab a bargain).
