Tip # 76:  The following are a few tips on writing numbers:

Rule 1:  The simplest way to express large numbers is best.

Examples:
4 million dollars OR $4 million OR four million dollars (not $4,000,000.  Be careful to be consistent within a sentence.

Rule 2:  Always spell out simple fractions and use hyphens with them.

Examples:
One-half of the class was present.
A two-thirds majority is enough to win.

Rule 3:  Write decimals in figures.  Put a zero (0) in front of a decimal unless the decimal itself begins with a zero.

Examples:
It grew 0.79 of a foot in one year.
It grew.07 of a foot in one year.

Rule 4:  The following examples apply when using dates:

Examples:
The meeting is scheduled for September 24.
The meeting is scheduled for the 24th of September.
We will be returning on October 1.
The 1st of October is on the calendar.

Rule 5:  Do not hyphenate one hundred, two hundred, etc.

Please correct the following sentences.

  1. How quick he runs.
  2. Neither Dan nor I are to follow.
  3. The desk and the chair sits in the corner.
  4. Each of us were scheduled to take the exam.
  5. The coach, not the players, have been ill.
